History

1969
In early 1969, Herman van der Breggen introduces caramel waffles in Brabant. By giving demonstrations at local weekly markets, allowing visitors to taste caramel waffles and by offering freshly baked caramel waffles, the Herman van der Breggen caramel waffle become increasingly popular. Later on in the year, the first caramel waffles were sold in the retail channel in the V&D department store. 
 
1979
In 1979, Edah becomes the first customer within the foodstuff sector. To meet the huge demand, a large bakery was built on Zevenheuvelenweg in Tilburg.
 
1982
Introduction of the Bakker Joop caramel waffles (margarine waffle and one of the most widely eaten caramel waffles in the Netherlands). Nowadays, Bakker Joop is available as a caramel waffle and as a caramel cake.
 
1990
Introduction of Gouda's Gilde caramel waffles.
 
1992
Acquisition of the range of organic health food products from fellow caramel waffle baker Van Doesburg.
 
1995
Kanjers caramel waffles are introduced to the market. Two extra large caramel waffles in an eye-catching packet; ideal when you fancy something delicious to eat!
 
1996
The introduction of caramel cakes. 



 
 
 
1997
Expansion of the Van der Breggen range through the acquisition of the Buys Zoenen Bakery in Oudenbosch.
 
1998
Expansion in capacity at Tilburg; a new warehouse and extra production space was constructed. A (largely) self-developed production line is installed in the production area.
 
2002
The market share of Kanjers caramel waffles continues to grow both in the Netherlands and abroad. Van der Breggen BV is the market leader in the caramel waffles, caramel cakes and chocolate-coated marshmallow product lines. In 2002, Van der Breggen was taken over by ZBG Europe; this secured the future of Van der Breggen BV.
 
2007
Van der Breggen is taken over by Gilde Investment. Through this acquisition, Van der Breggen and the van Bakkersland caramel waffle bakery in Moordrecht join together to form one company.
 
2007
The introduction of the Buys Efteling Zoentjes (chocolate-coated marshmallows), which are available at C1000 amongst other places. The Efteling Zoentjes (chocolate-coated marshmallows) are smaller than the usual Buys Zoenen (chocolate-coated marshmallows) and are therefore a perfect treat for children upwards of 3 years.
 
2009
Expansion of the Kanjers brand with caramel cakes, chocolate caramel waffles (formerly known as ‘Space’) and the addition of Kleintje Kanjers small caramel waffles and Kleintje Kanjers small chocolate caramel waffles.
Expansion of the Buys brand with two new tastes: Buys Negenzoenen Kokos and Buys Negenzoenen Cappuccino.
